Was Hillary Olson a bit of a tomboy when she was little? Well, her happiest memory was when she played in her tree fort on the creek in her hometown of Brockport, N.Y. Her favorite book has always been Gulliver's Travels. And as a grown-up she loves hiking and kayaking.
Hillary is a respected non-profit leader with more than 14 years of experience in informal science education settings. As the Director of the Long Island Nature Collaborative for Kids (LINCK) at the Early Years Institute, she works to maintain coalitions of support with community members, educators, and other non-profit, child and nature-focused agencies to create and promote outdoor experiences for young children.
Hillary is passionate about nature education, is a certified Nature Explore Classroom trainer through the Arbor Day Foundation, and is one of the original founding members of LINCK. Prior to joining EYI, she was Director of Education at the Long Island Children’s Museum where she was in charge of all aspects of on- and off-site education, directed major projects, helped to create and implement the museum's strategic plans, and was a leader in the creation of Our Backyard, an interactive outdoor museum gallery. Hillary was also the Visitor Education Coordinator for the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County and has worked in informal education at the Griffith Observatory and Planetarium in Los Angeles and as a Naturalist in a Northern California outdoor school.
Albert Einstein is the author of Hillary’s favorite quote: "Imagination is more important than knowledge." She holds a B.S. in Earth and Space Sciences from Stony Brook University and an M.S.Ed. in Museum Leadership from Bank Street College of Education. Hillary lives with a lizard, two cats, a daughter, a step-son, a husband, and a spider named Sid that lives in her bathroom.
